Koshi Toppu Jungle Safari

Koshi Tappu Wildlife reserve lies on the alluvial flood plain of Sapta Koshi River in the southeastern lowland. The reserve spreads over Saptari and Sunsari districts in East Nepal over the embankments of river koshi. It is recognized as Wetland site from 1987. The river Sapta Koshi which is the largest river in Nepal and becomes one of the three main tributes of the Ganges, flows through the reserve. The mighty river Koshi calms down in winter, swells up dangerously in monsoon, brings severe flood problems and often changes its course. The reserve hosts 439 species of bird variety, some of which fly all the way from Siberia during winter. Ducks, herons, storks, egrets, ibis are seen on the riverbanks. Animals found here are wild buffalo, wild boar, hog deer, spotted deer, blue bell and jackle. The other attractions of this reserve are Gharial Crocodile and gigantic Dolphins.

Best time
The best time to visit Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is between October to March. During this period, birdwatcher get a chance to view different kinds of migratory and local birds. You will also observe the spectacular views of mountain peaks including Makalu I (8,463) in the north.

Getting There
By Air
There is a regular45 minutes flight to Biratnagar from Kathmandu. From Biratnagar, it takes a comfortable one and half hour drive to reach the Camp.

By River
An exciting 8-10 days raft trip on Sun Koshi River reaches directly to the Koshi Tappu Camp.

By Land
From Kathmandu it takes 10 hours drive of about 500 km to reach the Koshi Tappu Camp. From Kakarvitta, it is roughly 3 hours drive to reach the camp along the east-west highway. From Chitwan, it is 300 km which takes roughly an 8 hour drive to reach the camp.

Activities:
Koshi Tappu Wildlife Camp offers many options and activities to give full opportunities of viewing the wildlife at its best. The exploration of the wildlife is under the guidance of a trained local naturalist.
Morning jungle treks by the river lagoons and wetlands provide excellent opportunity to view birdlife, deer and herds of water buffalos. Floating down the stream on a boat offers a great chance of spotting gigantic Dolphins, Marsh Muggers and a chance to visit and study the unique village settlements of Tharu community.
