Gems and Jewellery
Nepal has some of the best gold and silver smiths in the world i.e. the Newar craftsmen. These craftsmen from the Newar community have been delighting collectors and royal patrons with their exquisite creations for a long period of time spanning more than 600 years. So for the finest jewelry with a competitive cost, Nepal will be the first choice.

The typical gems available in Nepal are crimson (in pink), sunset rose, peach, golden, amber and green, which are the finest tourmalines from the eastern ranges. There are also very rare lime-green tourmalines which can’t be found elsewhere and some with more than one color in a single stone. The lemon-yellow tourmalines are newly-discovered gems of Nepal.

Common tourist shopping items include souvenirs and trinkets like gems and jewelry. However, one should be careful while buying jewelry as assessing their quality is difficult. There are government restrictions that visitors should be aware of before purchasing items to take home. Vendors in Basantpur Square and Thamel flog vast arrays of Tibetan-style curios.

Curios are all attractive stuff, but much of what is claimed to be silver, turquoise, coral or ivory is fake, and virtually none of it is antique. Gold- and silversmiths in the old city (mainly north and west of Indrachowk) produce fine ethnic jewellery tourist shops sell cheaper but perhaps more wearable ornaments, usually made with white metal. Gem sellers are grouped mainly at the east end of New Road. Antiques are not permitted to be taken out of the country.
