Bird Watching

Nepal has bird watching societies as well. Here, a happy bird watchers will become a good messenger for the country once he returns to his home.  Birdwatchers go around the globe in search of birds and keeping records of what they have seen. At the end of the day as assessment is made of the number of new sightings. The sight of a rare bird generates great excitement among these bird enthusiasts. In Kathmandu Valley as well, there are many bird watching sites. Actually, it has the longest history of bird watching. Bagmati and Manohora rivers are famous rivers for bird watchers in Nepal. Ibis bill, Hodgson’s Bush chat, white –tailed Eagle, White-rumped Vulture etc. are the different birds found here.

The finest birding destination in the valley without much doubt will be the Phulchowki Hills. It is located 18 km southeast of Kathmandu with its peak culminating into a height of 2760 m. the highest in the valley. At the foot of the hills, lies the Botanical Gardens of Godavari. Starting from the botanical garden bird watching is possible right close to the summit of Phulchoki. Around 100 species of birds including the only endemic of Nepal, Spiny Babbler, has been recorded in the past during a daylong excursion. Somer of the rare and special birds are Nepal Cuita, Grey-sided, Laughing thrush, Black throat Parrot bill etc.

Shivapuri is another fine destination in the Valley. It is protected area and guarded by Nepal Army. The birds’ life here is similar to Phulchoki. The other recommended bird watching area is Nagarjun which lies northwest of Kathmandu. Out of the Valley, Chitwan is one of the best spot for bird watching. It is an ideal home for birds. Here one can see variety of woodpeckers, babblers, hornbills, owls, nightjars, pipits, ducks, egrets etc. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is the another well-known location in Nepal for bird watching, lies in the eastern terai along the east-west highway. A very large number of birds can be seen along the wetlands and marshes created by Koshi rivers.
